Portland Oregon, 1907. Brothers-in-law and close friends Fred Leupold and Adam Volpel go into business together building surveying equipment by hand. In 1942 the business name changes from Leupold Volpel & Co. to Leupold & Stevens Instruments Inc. The company shifts direction in 1947 when they introduced their first riflescope called the Plainsmen. Ten years later they are developing weatherproof optics as well as compasses. In 1962 Leupold developed the revolutionary Duplex Reticle that is still a common feature in riflescopes today. In 1968 the company relocated their headquarters and manufacturing plant to Beaverton Oregon. Leupold & Stephens is now in its fifth generation of ownership, employing approximately 700 people.

The 2014 NRA National Championship equipment survey listed Leupold as the most popular scope manufacturer for the High Power Hunter Competition.
