Extraterrestrial Origins

Black+Decker is credited with building the first cordless drill in 1961. NASA was looking for a zero-impact wrench for their Gemini Project that would spin bolts in zero gravity without spinning their astronauts. Black+Decker was contacted to design and develop a drill with these specifications and later designed a cordless rotary hammer drill for the Apollo Moon Program. The tool company began selling their cordless tools to large industrial companies, but it wasn’t until 1978 that Makita started marketing cordless drills to the general public. In 2010, Black+Decker merged with Stanley Works to become Stanley Black & Decker.

As with most power tools, a generic search for cordless drills on Amazon will produce a long list of options to choose from.  Consider Amazon’s best customer reviewed drills to find something tailored to your needs.

In a word, torque. A drill uses constant torque, making it ideal for boring holes and driving short fasteners into soft materials. An impact driver senses resistance and automatically modulates torque, making it more effective driving larger fasteners into harder materials.

Hammer drills are usually found as the secondary function on a conventional drill. Cam-action mechanics are implemented in order to convert the rotational force into a linear percussive force on the chuck. Hammer drills are commonly used for boring holes into concrete, masonry, or stone.
